Hey you, wanted to check in. You've been staying safe, since you know, I kind of went nuts on you. Right?
Don't worry. They've got me at the Lumenarium. I'm going to be in recovery for a little bit, so I'm no danger. Whatever this is, it should pass by then.
I'm in good hands and the lockjoint's healing ok. I just got so caught up in that stupid hunt I didn't notice how bad it had gotten. Anna had to save me, but now that I'm here it's keeping me out of trouble.
[In the early hours of December 22, just before the sunrises, a small package is left outside Ahiru's door. It's neatly wrapped in brown packaging paper and closed shut with a black twine bow. Tucked under one of the strings is a tag:]
Dear Ahiru, Happy Holidays From Megumi Fushiguro and Kage [Flipping over the tag, she will notice a large black paw print.
Upon opening the present, she will see an emerald green velvet pouch. She might even be able to smell a hint of a savory aroma wafting next to a much sweeter scent. Inside is a plump beautifully browned loaf of pretzel bread sprinkled with large oceanic salt. If she looks directly underneath, she will notice another small dish wrapped in wax paper. The shape is a bit odd, but when she fully opens it, she will realize it's two small light green cakes purposefully cut out to look like ducks. When she finally gets a chance to taste the baked goods, she might think the cakes taste like a sweeter version of the tea Megumi served her at the Tanabata festival, and that the loaf of bread is from the bakery on the boardwalk.
A little over a year ago, Megumi recalls meeting Ahiru at this exact bakery. She was running around very busy and smacked square into him sending flour flying. Although he was annoyed in the moment, he recalls sharing his first meal here, with her. He had been hungry, and she was kind enough to share with him. This stuck with him, and he made sure that this year, her gift would pay respect to that.
Giving instead of receiving is particularly important to Megumi, especially on this day. Today is the winter solstice, which is a celebration he has from back home. Celebrating that everyone has made it to and through the darkest night of the year, symbolizing hope for brighter days to come. He hasn't told anyone that today is his birthday, but knowing he can bring some cheer to his friends gives him some peace of mind and solace. ]
So, uh, hey Ahiru. You wanted me to talk to you about why I think I'm kind of a bad person, right? I mean, one of the old stories on why not everyone likes me anyway.
I think it was something like that. Either way, I know the story I'd be telling.
I don't quite remember the context, but I think? We were going to be talking about the whole situation with Ruby and how that played out. And why I used to hate Red with every fiber of my person.
This whole thing starts with my best friend Roman. We were both crooks, deep down. Petty theft, armed robbery, that sort of thing. We weren't really out to destroy the world or permanently ruin anything, just get rich. It was a way to survive in a screwed up world and we were fine with.
Rubes was always little miss goody two shoes so we butted heads. At first, I think it was really more of a playful rivalry than anything. Roman didn't actually take her seriously at first.
But we'd only just started working with Cinder then.
( While Peter isn't one to... Do Holiday Things, there is technically a part of him that reaches out. Not because the ancient demon king of Hell has much interest in holiday celebrations, but Paimon has learned that it's a time when many people Gift Things, and connection with others is of a special importance to his spirit. The energy is right for it, and so, towards the end of the month, he bestows little gifts to people.
Left on Ahiru's doorstep, wrapped carefully in thin cloth, is an odd little doll in the likeness of a duck, meticulously hand-crafted with an assortment of random bits and bobbles collected over time. He's never met the girl for himself, but he's learned of her through Peter, and felt a special something to her spirit. She's powerful, he thinks.
Set next to the doll, like a mysterious calling card, is a leaf — bearing Paimon's sigil delicately burned into it like filigree. )
[This year, Maul had decided to behave himself when it came to giving gifts, unlike in years past where he broke into people's houses rather like Santa himself did. All gifts are left on the porch or front step of the recipient's home for them to find in the morning.
Maul didn't know Ahiru well but it seemed rude to exclude her seeing as how he'd gotten everyone else a gift at the Disaster House. So he'd gotten her something a bit amusing: a stuffed duck accompanied by baby ducks. He hoped she found it cute or at least wasn't offended by it. Accompanying it was a note in blocky handwriting wishing her a Merry Christmas signed from Darth Maul.]
[the day after holiday celebrations after the sanctuary ahiru can find a bundle on her doorstep wrapped in a muslin and tied a lightly chewed leather strap. it contains an elegant fur lined cloak in light grey with a fur stole that laces onto the collar and a lot of feathery embroidered detailing. on the outside. bundled inside of that is a matching woolen dress with lightly belled sleeves and a practical -high-low hem that should skim ahiru's knees in front, and silver clasps meant to look like little wings. sansa has sewn feathers from the various farm chickens around the chest and shoulders. at the center of the bundle is a padded, beaded collar that pins onto the dress in front, sewn with little flying ducks that, when assembled properly, appear to be flying in a v formation. there is a note stamped with sansa's personal direwolf-and-weirwood sigil in wax. it reads:]
Dear Ahiru, I don't know if they have any winter holidays on your world, but we had a very good time celebrating them at the Sanctuary. I thought you might like some nice winter things; please let me know if they need any alterations. I should be glad to make you any other woolens you might need for this weather, and I hope you will join us for some of our celebrations at the Sanctuary sometime.
We're trying to do a ritual to save the Pthumerians. The group I'm in has got every blood...except Warmblood. I'd hate to ask this of you, but I'm scared if no one does this ritual, Riteior is going to be able to somehow infect the other Pthumerians.
[As soon as he's reached the relative safety of the boardwalk, Fakir pulls out the omni. He's not sure yet how long he's been gone, but he's very sure of what he needs to do before anything else.]
